Are Your Competitors Stealing The March On Innovation?

Innovation is the lifeblood of every product developer or marketer. According to the latest GRIT (Greenbook Research Industry Trends) Report, it’s no surprise that “traditional” market research methodologies have had such a battering in recent years: our understanding of what truly drives consumer behaviour has shifted dramatically – rendering many techniques obsolete – and our ability to acquire data, process it and generate insights has transformed. It’s easy to fall behind.

We all know that brands and retailers are looking for “cheaper, faster, better” and looking for innovation borne of technology, science, mobile and digital as panaceas to get there. That means product developers, marketers, researchers and commercial teams have got to get smarter to prove the ROI and predictive performance of their R&D efforts, not least to secure/protect listings, as brands/manufacturers adopt the latest techniques to steal competitive advantage.

Here at VYPR, we are proud to be collaborating with some of the Top50 most innovative brands in the world, as featured in the GRIT report, as well as being cost-effective and accessible to smaller businesses in the UK. They choose VYPR because we deliver against the key values and criteria that are determinants of successful innovation, as identified by the GRIT report:

Agility: Every week, we test 1000s of variables that make up every product with consumers, providing effective tools and techniques that deliver fast, statistically robust and consumer-led intelligence to enhance, accelerate and predict existing/new product performance. Our clients can use our technology to test and iterate EPD and NPD throughout the development process, proving validation to retailers every step of the way.

Mobile, On Demand & Quick Turn Insights: VYPR can turn around consumer insights on purchase intent in under 24 hours, with consumers responding to live questions and surveys as they shop using their geo-location, which provides the context that exit surveys and focus groups simply don’t deliver.

Verification & Representativeness: We work hard to make sure that our consumer panel of over 35K UK consumers is representative of the population and supermarket share, clean of bots and profiled to ensure that there is no gamification on the platform.

Science: We’ve applied the latest research in the fields of Neuroscience, Psychology and Behavioural Economics to create a tool that leads the market in understanding how and why people make decisions in the context of their shopping missions, which means that we ask the right questions to obtain the most statistically robust insights. Our platform has been independently verified by Paul Dolan, Professor of Behavioural Science at London School of Economics, for its ability to generate insights based on System 1 consumer behaviour: the fast, instinctive and emotional decisions that can’t be picked out in stated behaviours by traditional research.

Is Your Innovation R&D Geared For Consumer Purchase Intent?

One of the most troubling insights from recent psychological research is that we might not really understand why customers make low-consideration shopping decisions. First, we take a decision, then we invent the reasoning retrospectively. So, how can we truly unearth what consumers want if we can’t really trust what they tell us? This week, our lead Data Scientist Robin Gower explains how VYPR can unlock the difference between stated attitudes and actual purchase behaviour.

Daniel Kahneman describes a battle in our brains between the fast-thinking System 1 (which is quick to act and judge) and the slower, more deliberative System 2. We can take an immediate decision with System 1 and then – when we’re asked to explain our reasoning (let’s say in a focus group or in a supermarket exit survey) – invoke System 2 to invent a rationale after the fact.

This undermines our attempts to uncover insights from consumers. It casts doubt on the validity and usefulness of focus groups. It also affects non-traditional research tools like VYPR. We can’t ask people “would you buy this healthier alternative?”. We may as well be asking “would you prefer to be healthy or unhealthy?”. The responses reflect our personal desires to be fit and healthy (or our recognition that this is socially desirable); not what we choose to put in our shopping baskets.

In reality, we eat a lot of food that is less healthy than we’d care to admit. If you ask someone to account for their choices at the checkout, they’ll perhaps come up with a reason such as “I went to the gym this morning, so I’ve earned these chips”, but this isn’t necessarily what they were thinking as they walked through the supermarket aisles.

So, what’s the solution? How can we tap into System 1 – sometimes impulsive – shopping behaviour? In short, we need to learn from decisions, not opinions. We need to ask our panellists to choose between products (e.g. chips versus boiled potatoes), not concepts. The options we present to the panel should be products that exhibit the attributes you want to compare.

For instance, if I ask a consumer “how important is the tractor mark to your decision to buy milk?”, we’re asking them to engage their System 2 process to invest far more time than they would normally spend on a decision at fixture. Whereas, if I ask two comparable audiences to make a purchase decision on a carton of milk – one of which containing the tractor mark – we can immediately see what impact the tractor mark has on purchase intent. VYPR provides a “Split Test” for exactly this purpose. The difference may seem subtle, but adopting this approach leads to much more robust analysis than would be possible from traditional focus groups or exit surveys.

How Will New NHS Guidelines Impact Your Product Sales?

VYPR Purchase Intent Report

Consumer Response To NHS Advice On 100 Calorie Limit For Child Snacks

New NHS guidelines advise limiting children’s snacks to two-a-day, each under 100 calories, following Public Health England warnings that primary school children could be consuming 3x their recommended daily limit of sugar. VYPR commissioned a report on what this means for purchase intent among consumers and the results are in.

Over 74% of the VYPR panel (representative of the UK population) claimed to be aware of the new Change4Life guidelines, with a similar number claiming that they would heed the new guidelines. Currently, over 65% of consumers claim to check calorie content on pack when making purchases for children, with 58% claiming to provide their children with 1-2 snacks per day and a further 32% providing 3 snacks or above.

We presented a number of household staple snacks to parents, including products from Dairylea, Kellogg’s, Cadbury, Kinder and Walkers, with calorie content ranging between 95 calories and 218 calories. We tested each product with and without explicit labelling and the results showed a significant shift in purchase intent. Overall, explicit labelling on calorie content resulted in an average variation of 4% in purchase intent, either positively or negatively.

For instance, a 21g pack of Raspberry Yoghurt Coated Flakes containing 113 calories suffered a decrease of 11.9%, whereas a 37g Kellogg’s Strawberry Nutrigrain Breakfast Fruity Bar containing 131 calories increased purchase intent by 3.6%. Whereas 101g Ham & Cheese Dairylea Lunchables Stackers containing 218 calories increased by 3%, a 18g Cadbury Dairy Milk Freddo containing 95 calories reduced by 4.9%.

All other things being equal, our research suggests that a combination of the new advice from the NHS and more explicit labelling on calorie content combined will perhaps shift product perceptions on healthiness and purchase intent over time. Interestingly, it would appear that there isn’t necessarily a positive link between displaying calorie content under 100 calories and improved purchase intent, suggesting that this triggers a reappraisal of the value of the product overall.

At VYPR, we enable fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) businesses to turn product innovation into a science, ensuring successful outcomes of the product development process. Every week, we test 1000s of variables that make up every product with consumers, providing effective tools and techniques that deliver fast, statistically robust and consumer-led intelligence to enhance, accelerate and predict existing/new product performance.

Ben Davies, VYPR CEO: “We’re confident that applying VYPR to products that fall within the revised NHS guidelines will enable product marketers to better understand – and quickly respond to – the potential impact on sales by reengineering products to maintain relevance, protect sales and ensure continued adoption by consumers.”

M&S Food: A Masterclass in Incremental Innovation.

Every year, we are inspired by the festive launches from the world of retail and M&S Food has long held a pioneering status in the innovation stakes, showcased annually at Christmas in store. Here at VYPR, we’re massive advocates of the power of incrementalism, defined as the gradual enhancement of product performance through a blend of innovation and marginal improvements, delivered over time, component by component. Just take our montage on the humble Christmas turkey and it’s obvious to see that M&S have been delivering a masterclass on this in spades for generations!

M&S combine their inimitable heritage in food with a passion for seeking out new innovation and a relentless pursuit of enhancing and reimagining their existing range, with just enough twists and turns to entice the foodies that want to impress, without putting off their core audience looking for staple favourites.

New and existing products are harmoniously planogrammed at fixture (often with equal billing), in order to reassure and inspire customers in equal measure. Treasured favourites are given a new lease of life in festive golden packaging, new flavour profiles enhance existing ranges and every message, ingredient and name is meticulously considered, both in isolation and as part of the broader range and theme. Their Summer campaign was also a great example of this.

At the heart of our ethos and technology is to give manufacturers and retailers the confidence to launch new creations and reimaginings of existing products by building stronger connections to their consumers. VYPR enables our clients to test, test and test again with our consumer panel to identify new concepts, refine existing ideas and understand every component of a product’s anatomy’s contribution to purchase intent.

Get Live NPD Feedback When It Launches: In Market Customer Tracking Just Got Better

In a recent podcast on the Future of Grocery, McKinsey points to price pressure for the malaise in FMCG innovation and the adoption of technology, automation and constant, iterative testing as its salvation. Launching NPD remains one of the biggest gambles in FMCG. No matter what investment you put in, the gap in understanding between what we think will happen when a new product launches versus what happens when a shopper faces on to the fixture is enormous. VYPR gives you live feedback from consumers on how NPD is performing and – more importantly – why your product may or may not be flying off the shelf.

The truth is that there is a huge gap to close when it comes to being able to track and monitor what’s happening in real time and a) respond quickly to successes and failings and – critically – b) understand what it is about your proposition that is or isn’t resonating with your customers. As the EPOS data flows in and your stakeholders line up for immediate updates on what’s happening to your NPD/EPD live in market, you need to have answers at your fingertips. Only VYPR can give you the rapid and statistically robust insights you need to get under the skin of why consumers are choosing to pick up your product or not.

April Preston Interview: Steal Greater Competitive Advantage By Improving Your NPD

April Preston (Executive Head of Food Innovation at Harrods) shares her perspective on how VYPR is helping businesses to speed up the NPD process, optimise success rates and increase sales from applying greater intelligence to FMCG NPD and innovation to steal competitive advantage.

“In my view, one of the biggest challenges facing FMCG is the NPD and innovation process; it’s just too slow. There are too many people involved, the process can be governed too much by subjective decision-making and we still don’t genuinely put the consumer at the heart of what we do daily. You’ve just got to look at how the communications and automotive industries have transformed themselves in the last 15 years and compare that to the humble ready meal: it has barely changed in the same timeframe!

Yet, we have access to so much data now: we’ve got EPOS data, qualitative and quantitative research coming out of our ears. So, what’s wrong? For me, we still don’t truly understand what consumers are thinking when they pick up a product in store. What is going through their mind? That gap in understanding has paralysed the industry in many ways: people are so afraid to take risks, which is understandable when the investment required can be so high.

The beauty of VYPR is that it really unlocks our understanding of that subconscious thinking and shopper behaviour, which means you get fantastically robust results. VYPR makes you feel more secure about the decisions you’re making in the NPD process, because you can better predict success rates and better optimise for sales by tapping into the minds of consumers, enabling you to stand up to scrutiny from your commercial stakeholders and investors; giving everyone reassurance and the confidence to push things further and take a few more risks, which is really what we need as an industry.

I find VYPR works most effectively at various stages in the process, but ultimately it works best when you want to test lots of different alternatives for an idea that you’ve had or refine key elements of the product in the later stages, whether you’re a great big retailing organisation or a small brand. I’ve used it in both instances with equal success.

The immediacy of VYPR is amazing: it is quick, easy and simple to use and you can weave it into any existing NPD/innovation process. The results come back very quickly and are easy to understand. I also love the fact that it is unlimited: no matter how many ideas we have as a team, we can test them all. There is so much complexity beneath the surface – the technology, data and behavioural science – but, as a user, you benefit from the results without getting bogged down in the detail.

VYPR has made a big difference to how we work: we’re making better decisions, we’re putting the customer at the heart of what we do and it has brought objectivity to the process. Ultimately, that leads to better relationships with customers, retailers and a greater return on investment throughout the NPD process.”

April Preston is Executive Head of Food Innovation at Harrods and has held leadership positions in businesses such as M&S and Two Sisters.

NPD & Technology Critical to Revenue Growth: BDO Food & Drink Survey Results.

According to this year’s BDO Food and Drink Survey, 92% of manufacturers stated that NPD will be the most important factor determining revenue growth, with 66% of respondents looking to technology and automation to improve efficiency. There are two key challenges that need to be considered in this context: 1) finding the right tech to streamline your NPD/EPD process and 2) taking the right steps to better assure certainty of NPD performance. Here’s how we can help.

Technology Can Get You To Better Products Faster.

In an earlier blog, we pulled together a list of methods that you can adopt to improve efficiency, prove ROI and justify the protection of marketing and research budgets that come under pressure when price and margin challenges take hold. Click here to read it.

Increasing automation and technology is absolutely part of the answer to unlocking the potential of FMCG manufacturers to innovate better and faster. For instance, VYPR’s technology enables product developers to test 1000s of different product variations with consumers via smartphone, with statistically robust results landing in your inbox within 24 hours. Every component (packaging, branding, pricing, messaging etc) can be tested to the nth degree, from concept stage through to post-feasibility refinement, with an annual licence costing less than a single focus group/qualitative exercise, which may yield misleading results that don’t translate into the desired behaviour at fixture.

Context Is King When It Comes To Certainty.

The second big challenge is around context. According to the behavioural science boffins, too much faith is being placed in using traditional and expensive methodologies to understand why consumers choose to buy your NPD. In reality, people can’t tell you the ‘why’ behind unconscious decisions. They’ll post-rationalise and generate a good story for you during research, but it won’t be accurate, since people are largely unaware of many factors that influence their decision making, particularly when they are in store. As such, many of the tools used today to prove/validate your NPD can’t be empirically trusted to give you any degree of certainty on what will/won’t work.

In order to get to the ‘why’, you have to test different variables to identify which ‘what’ leads to a significant change in response, which is essentially what VYPR does. VYPR removes a lot of the biases of traditional market research techniques by focusing on addressing ‘in context’ questions and accessing unconscious, System 1 responses. Traditional conscious questions (even conducted in the field) can’t tap into unconscious drivers of action, so if you want to predict what someone is going to purchase in store, you have as far as possible to replicate that environment and decision making process. Our geo-fencing technology enables consumers to answer these questions live, during their shopping missions in store and at fixture; again, via a simple smartphone app.

By focusing on testing (as opposed to consciously asking) what changes consumer behaviour and by doing this in context with short fast questions, VYPR is much more in line with current thinking on Behavioural Science and will deliver more accurate results than alternative methods of research. So, if you’re one of the 66% people that believes technology can fuel better NPD and/or one of the 92% people that believe better and faster NPD is critical to your revenue growth, then please contact us.

FMCG Innovation: Avoid The SKU Squeeze.

According to Nielsen, 3 in 4 new SKUs fail to generate £100K sales in their first year of trading. The UK’s top 4 retailers have delisted at least 7500 SKUs in the past year and the number of branded and private label launches is decreasing. According to the latest Newton report, discounters with just 1,350 SKUs are convincing customers that they have more innovative products than at a big four supermarket, which averages closer to 35,000 SKUs.

Dave Lewis, CEO at Tesco, recently issued this call to arms for manufacturers: “So much of what I see is renovation, not innovation. The opportunity for manufacturers to offer greater value through innovation has never been greater.” In short, it’s never been more important to prove that your EPD and NPD will stand up to scrutiny and VYPR will help you to do just that.

The Science of Competitive Advantage.

From initial concepts, product names, branding and packaging to ingredients, colourways, pricing and marketing messages, the anatomy of every product is different and it can be difficult to decipher what is truly driving success and purchase behaviour in store. Every week, we test 1000s of variables that make up every product with consumers, providing fast, statistically robust and consumer-led intelligence to enhance, accelerate and predict existing/new product performance.

We’ve never had access to so much data. However, the unconscious decision making processes of shoppers remains untapped. Our technology is fuelled by sophisticated data and behavioural science that unlocks our understanding of these drivers for the first time.

NPD/EPD Innovation: 5 Steps To Save Money, Prove ROI & Defend Your Budget.

The pressure on FMCG retail, caused (in part) by Brexit is undeniable: margins are under pressure and risk aversion is creeping in; all inevitably leading to one thing: downwards pressure on budgets. The need to commercially prove ROI has just stepped up another gear, as marketing, research and innovation budgets are often a) the first and easiest to be cut or challenged because b) they are the hardest areas where ROI can be proven. Here are 5 steps you can take now to protect your position, save money and prove ROI.

1. Routinely Audit & Update Your Methodology

Behavioural science continues to generate a huge amount of interest in FMCG and it’s with good reason. According to the scientists, 95% of decisions are unconscious when it comes to making low consideration purchase decisions. Traditional market research and focus groups can cost £000s and no longer stand up to commercial scrutiny. Ask yourself whether your current research and testing methods are truly giving you the statistically robust insights that your commercial teams and stakeholders need and will trust.

2. Streamline Into A Minimum Viable Process

It can be hugely expensive to get new products to market and few (if any) businesses truly take the full cost into account. Take proactive steps to map out your current process and departmental interdependencies, identifying areas where efficiencies can be made and cutting out anything that doesn’t translate into achieving a direct link to commercial improvements in performance. It may be that you can lead the march on achieving efficiencies instead of waiting for the axe to fall simplistically on your R&D budget.

3. Seek Out Incremental Marginal Gains

We have never had so much access to data, but is it the right and useful data? We still don’t understand what it is that triggers a response in consumers to put a product in their basket (or not) at the critical moment of truth AND in the context of the shop. Is it the price, name, messaging, ingredients, health benefits, branding, packaging? How do each of these work together? Sweat the small stuff and look at every component that makes up your proposition. Ensure that you place as much focus on your existing lines, as well as what’s currently in your innovation pipeline. It’s more likely that multiple marginal gains achieved over time will be your saviour versus one big bet on a new innovation.

4. Iterative & Agile Validation

Don’t wait for your concept to become a reality before it is validated with consumers, so that you can predict what impact each and every component change will have on sales and the bottom line. Make sure that you validate every potential change (using your revised testing methods developed in Step 1) with consumers, shoppers and your feasibility teams before proceeding through (as well as during) the more expensive stages of your product development process.

5. Embrace Technology To Increase Efficiency & Effectiveness

There are literally hundreds of tools (e.g. Feedly) that can be set up simply (and cheaply) to do the heavy grunt work of seeking out and sifting through insights to fire your innovation pipeline, whether it’s scraping social media for trends or pulling in multiple blog feeds from across the world into a simple dashboard, without you having to leave the office or engage in expensive field research.

Moreover, the advertising and digital media industry has been using split testing to test 100s of 1000s of variables in creative work to optimise media effectiveness for the best part of a decade. The barriers to entry are pretty low, too, from a budget perspective. These can be tested both in and out of market.

VYPR works very much in the same way. We use data, behavioural science and technology to help the likes of Morrisons, Iceland, Mars, KFC and private label manufacturers to cost-effectively test 1000s of variables that make up every product with shoppers, providing effective tools and techniques that deliver fast, statistically robust and consumer-led intelligence to enhance, accelerate and predict existing/new product processes and in market performance; all by unlocking our understanding of those unconscious drivers of product performance.

Road-test Vypr’s technology & consumer panel.

85% of new products fail.

We’re on a mission to change that.

In our experience, people fail to test products effectively with consumers, either because it’s too expensive or they’ve been burned by relying on old-school market research that doesn’t translate into commercial performance at the ultimate moment of truth: in the live context of a frantic shopping mission.

We’d love you to road-test Vypr, give us your feedback and enjoy the benefits of better product intelligence. We’ll connect you to 1000s of consumers and you’ll get unlimited opportunities to test your latest innovations or iterations.

If you love Vypr, we’ll get you an annual licence set up. If you don’t, we’ll leave you be. Vypr works best on low-consideration purchases such as FMCG, fast fashion, small consumer durables.
